Introduction- Who am I ???

Hi my name is Shauna O'Leary. I am a student in SETU Waterford, completing my final year of my Bachelor of Business (Honours)- Accounting degree. This year, I am taking a course on the digital economy where we make blogs to discuss it and how it affects the current corporate landscape.

In todays blog I am going to introduce myself and discuss the information systems I used on my work placement and how they effected my work daily. As you are already aware my name is Shauna O'Leary and I am a final year accounting student in SETU Waterford. As this is a Business Blog, I would like to explain why I choose my to do a Bachelor of Business Degree with Accounting. The interest in doing a business degree first came about when I was in secondary school, simply Science and Languages did not pique an interest in potential careers as much as Business and Accounting. So, I choose to put SETU Waterford's Bachelor of Business Degree on my CAO. This course really interested me from the point that in Year 1 & 2 you get to do a general business course, trying out subjects such as Accounting, Economics, Management and Marketing. I also liked that in Year 3 that you to specialize your degree and that you get the option of doing work placement.

For my work placement I chose to go to Asple & Co, Wexford. Here is where I was introduced to working daily on Information Systems. The most frequently used Information Systems was Microsoft and CCH Accounts Production. I used Excel everyday this is where I put in raw data to produce accounting journals. I then took these journals and entered this data into CCH Accounts Production to create the final accounts report. These two information systems were vital for me to complete my accounts. On my placement also I found MS Teams a great tool for collaborative work and stay connected with everyone in the office. While I was on my work placement in Asple & Co, they began to introduce a new information system that analyzed out the debits and credits of a bank statement. This increased productivity on bank rec's, instead of it taking a week to do a larger firm's bank rec, with the new information system software provided by Sage, it took to complete the same firm's bank rec 1-2 days. This system was implemented quiet quickly and everyone in the office loved the benefits.

Overall, I had a great work placement and the information systems in Asple & Co, helped with me learning so much and gaining some really great experience. In my opinion I think its great if a firm keeps up to date with their information systems as it increases productivity, if set up and applied properly to a firm and that adequate training is provided to staff also
